CHICAGO METHODS
A STARTLING ADMISSION MACHINE GUN MOUNTED ON CAR. NAPIER. August 21. “ I wanted to get a machine gun at this stage, as I had studied the methods of the Chicago gun gangs, and I wanted to fit a machine gun in the back of the car as a means of defence should I be pursued by the police at anj” time.” The above passage was one of the declarations of a startling nature contained in the statement to the police of Fred Matthews, alias Leslie Scotty aged 21 years, who appeared at the Napier Police Court before Messrs A. E. Bedford and R. Hay Chapman, J.P.’s, faced with six charges of breaking and entering.
The accused pleaded guilty and was committed for sentence. The prisoner was one of a party arrested some weeks ago, but he made his escape from the car while on the way to the police station.
