STOWAWAY FINED
COMMUNIST PROPAGANDA ALLEGED.
WELLINGTON, August 20
Though fined £2 in Christchurch on Tuesday for attempting to stow away on the Lyttelton ferry steamer, James Timothy Rawlings, aged 29, a fireman, stowed away the same day in the steamer Gale. “He is an active member of the Communist Party,” said Sub-inspector Ward in court to-day, “ and we have reason to believe that he is travelling about in connection with Communistic activites.”
The accused denied that he had gone to Christchurch on Communistic work. He had gone to get a job that he understood was open. He was fined £3, in default 21 days, and given time to find the money.
