THE COOK ISLANDS.

EXPORTS OF TOMATOES. RESTRICTIONS NOT JUSTIFIED. x WELLINGTON, October 8. The Minister in charge of the Cook Islands (Sir Apirana Ngata), in conversation with a reporter to-day, said that any restriction on the Cook Islands tomato trade would be in the interests neither of the themselves nor the general public of New Zealand. There could be no more justification for imposing restrictions than there could be for restrictions on the importation into the North Island of mutton from Canterbury or oysters from Stewart Island. The question of the introduction of the Cook Island fruit fly to New Zealand had been closely investigated by the department, and was not considered a menace. The Mediterranean fly had never been known to exist in the Cook Group.
