ENGLISH TRAVELLER IN TROUBLE.
t( CHRISTCHURCH, September 30. His career has been one of fraud He has defrauded everyone who has tried to treat him decently,” said Mr E. D. Mosley, S.M., in the Magistrate's Court, speaking of Stephen Harold Smedley. Smedley, a traveller, aged 36, who comes from England, was charged with failing to comply with the terms of his release on probation.
The probation officer said that in July 1929, at Dunedin, Smedley had been admitted to probation for a year on three charges of false pretences, reduced from charges of forgery. He had been ordered to make restitution of the amount involved (£l2 9s). He had not, however, done so, and his general conduct had not been satisfactory. The accused was sentenced to three month in gaol on one of the ori"inal charges.
