—The first electric telegraph in England operated between Paddington and Drayton in 1855. Direct evidence of the present unsatisfactory state of the passenger and cargo services between New Zealand and Australian ports is furnished by the last trip of the intercolonial steamer Maheno. Figures supplied by the Union Steam Ship Company reveal the fact that the Maheno, which left Bluff on September 29 for Melbourne, carried only 42 saloon and 25 steerage passengers and 545 tons of cargo from New ports.
