ASHBURTON RACES. ASHBURTON. September 20. The spring meeting of the Ashburton County Racing Club was held to-day. The weather was fine until late in the afternoon, when the sky became cloudy and rain set in after the last race. There was a fair attendance, but speculation was not particularly brisk, the totalisator investments being £9720, compared with £11,431 last year, where there were only seven races. Good fields were in evidence to-day and there was some interesting sport. Starshooter won the Ashburton Handicap very decisively. Gustavo put up a good performance in winning the Fairfield Hack Handicap, in which he showed evidence of staying, and this three-year-old brother to Count Cavour may be up to classic form later. C. Camont, the rider of Starshooter, was cautioned for crossing over in front of Rascal in the straight. There was an inquiry after the Farewell Handicap into a complaint by C. Saxon, the rider of On Top, that First Raid, ridden by A. Messervey, crossed him in the straight. The decision was that if interference took place it was accidental. Personally, I saw no interference. as First Raid only beat On Top by a narrow margin, getting up in the last couple of strides. The following are the results:— AKANUI HURDLE HANDICAP, Of HOsovs. One mile and a-half. 3 —HAZE, 9.12 (M. Kirwan) .... I S—STAR STRANGER 11, 9.0 (G. W. Scobie) 2 I—PANGOLIN, 10.11 (G. Dry Area took charge at the start and at the end of half a mile led Gala Day by six lengths, with Troilus and Haze next. Dry Area still had a long lead half a mile from home, where Haze ran into second place, while Troilus dropped back beaten. Haze caught Dry Area at the entrance to the straight and won easing up by about three lengths. Pangolin

headed Gala Day after jumping the last hurdle, but Star Stranger 11 finished strongly and cut him out of second money on the post. _ Gala Day and Dry Area were next. Time, 2min 46sec. LONGBEACH HACK HANDICAP, Of lOOsovs. Six furlongs.

ROY REED CENSURED. SYDNEY, September 15. The Australian Jockey Club stipendiary stewards concluded an inquiry to-day into Roy Reed’s riding of Nightmarch on Saturday, and censured him, declaring that he did not make the most of Nightmarch’s chance of winning, and the horse should have been ridden more vigorously. The s(«wards also, inquired into interference in the Spring Handicap, when Eaglet and a couple of others were bumped. The stewards expressed the opinion that the trouble was caused by the leaders slowing down, allowing Gay

Crest to get on the heels of those ahead, which resulted in much jostling. A prominent metropolitan candidate, Gwilliam G, is reported as having gone amiss.
