TWO KNIGHTHOODS AWARDED. WELLINGTON. February 28. His Excellency the Governor-General has announced that his Majesty the King has been graciously pleased to confer upon the gentlemen named below the honours mentioned. It will be remembered that the issue of the list which, in the ordinary course of events would have been made on New Year’s Day, was postponed owing to his Majesty’s illness:— K.C.M.G. lington, Under-secretary of the Lands and Survey Department. SIR "WILLIAM NOSWORTHY. The figure of Sir William Nosworthy is well known in the political life of New Zealand. Born in Christchurch in 1867, he was educated at a private school and afterwards at the Christchurch Boys’ High School. On.leaving school he went into a grain merchant’s office, and then took up farming pursuits, spending some time on Parnassus stations in the Amuri district. Later he joined his brother in sheep farming, and in 1917 he purchased Mesopotamia Station, in the Ashburton district. He took a large share in the public life of the district, and in 1908 ha was elected to the position of member of Parliament for the Ashburton electorate, which seat he occupied continuously up to last year, when he did not pome forward as a candidate. In 1919 he joined Mr Massey’s Cabinet as Minister of Agriculture; he also held the offices of Immigration and .Tourist and Health Resorts, occupying these positions with much credit and dis-

tinction up to the close of Parliament last year. In 1909 he married Lilian Kate, daughter of the late Mr E. G. Wright, who was at that time a member of the New Zealand Parliament, representing the Ashburton seat.

SIR CARRICK ROBERTSON. AUCKLAND, February 28. Sir Carrick Robertson. K.8.M., 8.8.5. (London), F.R.C.S. (England), am! F.A.C.S. (hon.), foundation fellow of the College of Surgeons of Australasia, and past president of the New Zealand branch of . the British Medical Association, has enjoyed a brilliant career as a surgeon, his work receiving wide recognition. He was born in Glasgow in 1879, and spent his boyhood days in London, where he attended St. Dunstan’s College. Sir Cat rick received his medical education at the London University and Guy’s Hospital. He was awarded, among other prizes, the treasurer’s gold medal. He came to New Zealand in 1906, and for five years was superintendent of the Waihi Hospital. In 1911 he commenced the practice of his profession in Auckland. In addition to being past president of the New Zealand branch of the British Medical Association, he has been on two occasions president of the . Auckland division of the association. Sii Carrick is recognised as one of the pre- - mier surgeons of New Zealand. For 15 years he has rendered invaluable public service at the Auckland Hospital in the capacity of an honorary surgeon to that institution. In 1915 and 1916 he saw war service from the surgical aspect. Sir Carrick married the daughter of Mr C. Maxwell Hibberd, of Jersey, late Post-master-general of Natal.

AUSTRALIANS HONOURED. SYDNEY, February 28. The deferred New Year honours for Australians were announced to-night. They are as follow: Charles Gavan Duffv, of the High Court, to be K.C.M.G.; C.‘L. Baiilieu, of Melbourne, and Dr H. L Cumpston, Director-General of the Commonwealth Health Department, both C.M.G ; Daniel Levy, Speaker of the New South ales Legislative Assembly, Dr Norman Kater, M.L.C., and George Julius, chair- ? lan of the Council of the Scientific and Industrial Research Bureau, each K.B.
