Amateur Wellington gardeners who attempted to grow lettuces this year received little compensation for their pains (reports the Dominion). In many cases in suburban gardens the plants went prematurely to seed. One gardener reports having lost in that manner at least 100 likely-looking lettuces. He attributes the result to the use of fertiliser at the wrong stage of growth.
