FOR YOUNG ESSAYISTS.
ROYAL EMPIRE SOCIETY’S COMPETITION.
(From Our Own Correspondent.) LONDON, January 10. .the following subjects have been selected by the council of the Royal Empire Society for their essay competition? this year:-— For candidates between 16 and 19: “ The history and importance of the present Mediterranean possessions of Great Britain.”
For candidates between 14 and 16: “Great Seamen of the Tudor Period”; and . '
For candidates under 14: “Island Life in the Pacific.”
The competition was promoted some years ago, with a view to stimulating in the schools of the Empire and among the children of British subjects generally a s t udy- of the Empire and its problems. The closing date for the entries, which come from all over the world, is November A great deal of the preliminary work of examination is undertaken by headmasters and headmistresses, who submit only the best essays produced in their respective schools. The number of essays reaching the ucalquarters of the society during the past five years has averaged 400.
