The late Mr George Parr, a prominent Hamilton resident, and a member of the Auckland Harbour Board, who died on Monday week bequeathed the borough his home and three acres on the borough his home and three acres on the river bank as a convalescent home for child patients from the Waikato Hospital. The property is valued at £3OOO.
A new’ nine-roomed house at Mount Wellington was destroyed by fire at midday on Friday (says a Press Association telegram from Auckland). The owner, Mr C. V. Clare, was having a meal when a loud explosion was heard in the locality. Furniture valued at about £lOO was saved. The house was insured for £2OOO and the contents for £lllO.
Owing to the water shortage, the New Plymouth hydro-electric power is shut down for two periods of over an hour daily while the water collects. The tramways and industries have been stopped, and much inconvenience has been caused. There is no sign of rain.
