MAJOR WALLINGFORD SUPERIN'

AUCKLAND, March 1.

The appointment is announced of Major J. A. Wallingford, M.C., as superintendent of the Veterans’ Home, in succession to Major Nutsford, who has retired. Major Wallingford, who will take up his new duties at an early date, retired in August, 1927, after 42 years’ service with the Imperial and New Zealand military forces. He spent* 16 years with the New Zealand forces, and retired with a distinguished record. In his young days he went through a course at the MusketrySchool at Hythe, and he was later an instructor there for some time. Recognised as a master in the art of rifle Major Wallingford won the rifle shooting championship of the British Army six times within nine years. The same success attended his appearance at Bisley in 1911. Major Wallingford was transferred to the New Zealand forces, and at the outbreak of the War he went to Gallipoli as an infantry brigade machine gun officer. In addition tc tin work of organisation and supervision, he found time to do considerable rifle shooting on his own account. Musketrj' instruction was Major Wallingford’s specialty after his arrival in Auckland although he held several other appoint.ments on the staff of the northern com maud up to the time of his retirement.
