GOLDEN EMBLEM LEADS. At stated intervals a plebiscite is taker In Victoria to decide which, in the estimation of the voters, are the 12 best roses. The Argus, reporting on the contest, has some interesting comments, and show’s that nine of the 12 leading roses as far back as 1924 are still included in the 1928.- winners. We quote the following from our contemporary : — During the voting for the 12 best roses many interesting comments have been received for which it has not been possible to find space Nine of the leading roses in the 1924 plebiscite have retained their places; Red Letter Day, Miss Marion Manifold, and Frau Karl Druschki have had to give place to Mrs Bryce Allen, Dame Edith Helen, and Etoile de Hol lande. The inclusion of Etoile de Hol lande has placed the old favourite, Frau Karl Druschki, in the second 12 by a single vote, and many rose lovers will regret to see it out of the leading 12 But the increasing popularity of Etoile de Hollande can be understood. It makes vigorous growth, lias a deep red colouring, and is very sweetly perfumed. Madame Abel was first in the 1920 and 1924 lists, and has now taken second place ; Golden Emblem is the leading variety, with 303 votes given to it. The large number of rose varieties known to the people of Victoria has again been demonstrated in this plebiscite, when 246 varieties obtained votes. Seven of the leading varieties can be obtained in climb ing or bush form, and the other five are very vigorous, and could be used for low hedges, some even as pillar roses.
