KNOX COLLEGE MASTERSHIP.
AUCKLAND, November 25. The Knox College mastership report was presented at yesterday’s session of the General Assembly of the Presbyterian Church bj' the Rev. H. H. Barton. It was first of all decided that the retiring age of the master be 65. The report stated that the committee elected by the Assembly had gone carefully into the position and the merits of those nominated for the office, and following on a cablegram from Dr Hindon had erased his name at his request. Dr Kirk’s name had also had to be dropped. The committee after earnest consideration had decided to recommend that the Assembly receive the names of the Revs. Dr E. R. Merrington, E. Tipler, and W. B. Black in that order. So close was the dividing line in the committee that arrangements had been made to have each of these names duly nominated to the Assembly. The report was received. The Rev. George Miller moved: —“That Dr Merrington be appointed to the position.” This was seconded by the Rev. H. J. Ryburn. The Rev. C. J. Tocker moved:—“That the Rev. E. J. Tipler be appointed,” and the Rev. D. C. Herron seconded. The Rev. J. M. M‘Kenzie moved:— “ That the Rev. W. Bower Black be appointed,” and Mr T. C. Brasch seconded. The result of the vote gave Dr Merrington a majority over the other nominees of 15 votes. Professor Hewitson. who has filled the position of Master of Knox College since its foundation 20 years ago, made known to the newly-elected master the election which had come to him bjg the unanimous vote of the Assembly, and Dr Merrington suitably replied.
