AUCKLAND TOPICS.

By

Digger.

The Trenth am trainer J. Lowe arrived in Auckland on Friday with Catkin, who has engagements at the spring meetings. The hunter Poneperus is both working and jumping well. He made a mistake at New Plymouth, but does not seem likely to repeat it. He has much more speed than the average hunter, and may be a good proposition this season. Potoanui, Importer, and Clockwork continue to school well over the steeplechase country. They are all fit horses, with the first-named the speediest of the trio. The tree-year-old Staghunter had not showed up before the Avondale meeting, but he was working freely on the tracks and during the spring fixtures he may show something in keeping with his best two-year-old form. Mr Patter is keeping Monetize and Bulolo up to the collar, and both will race at the A.R.C. spring meeting. Their work has been mostly over short journeys, and they have each displayed speed above the ordinary. Beau Cavalier was billed to contest the Avondale Cup, but at later fixtures he may be relegated to jumping. He is a horse with a great constitution, and shows little effect of the hard racing he had during the winter. That good galloper Valkon is now a member of J. Wallace’s team at Te Aroha. Tea Time, in the same trainer’s stable, did not do well on the Wanganui trio, and that was the reason of his defection from Avondale engagements. J. Thorpe is not having an easy lime with Wilkne, and just as the big fellow starts to work well something arises to retard his preparation. On Thursday he wis showing signs of lameness behind after he had worked. The imported horse Tidal is coming on fairly well, but at present one would not expect him to have a great chance in the New Zealand Cup. His running in iminediate engagements may be awaited before a decision is made regarding the southern trip. None of the locally-trained two-year-olds are very forward, but at Avondale S. Hodge has a nice pair of colts that may show to advantage a little later in the" season. These are Professor and Imperial Prince. Professor is a nice black by Psychology from March, the dam of Te Kara, Queen Arch, Lucius, and others. Serang has made little improvement, and has been working sulkily. Another of the same tribe that appears to have completely lost form is that handsome horse Lysander. If either of these win again, a decent dividend should attend the victory. . That good horse, Te Monanui has been purchased by a North Auckland sportsman to do stud duties in the Dargayille district. He passed through on Friday on his way north.
