RACING IN NEW ZEALAND.

ASHBURTON RACES. Saturday, September 22. The Ashburton meeting was opened in wintry weather. A cold wind and showers made fhe day very uninviting, but it cleared towards the middle of the afternoon. There was a good attendance, and the track provided excellent going. During the day £9170 10s went through the totalisator, compared with £10,075 10s last year. First Raid and Proud Knight came on together to the turn, where the latter drew out and won by two lengths from Quaece, who beat Proud Knight by three lengths. Hoylake went up to Gold, Mint at the far turn and they led Chickwheat into the straight. Here Gold Mint retired and Malmsey moved up. Hoylake came away and won by four lengths from Malmsey, who beat Sir Roy by two lengths. Chickwheat and Gold Mint were almost on terms with the third horse. Time 2min 7sec.
