D. G. LOWE RETIRES. A'GREAT CAREER. RUGBY, August 24. D. G. Lowe, the famous English runner, who has announced his retirement from the -track, although only 26 years old, has been running in active competition against the cream of athletes for eeven or eight years. At the recent Olympic Games at Amsterdam he not only retained his Olympic title, but revealed even better form than at the previous Paris meeting. He won the 800 metres in Imin 51 4-ssec, which is an Olympic record. This he followed up by winning the 800 metres at Berlin last Sunday, beating Dr Otto Peltzer, the famous German runner, in Imin 51 l-ssec. This was revenge for his defeat by Peltzer in the famous race at Stamford Bridge, when both beat the existing world’s record for the distance. This triumph marks the end of Lowe’s great career on the track. DOMINION OLYMPIC TEAM. RETURNING BY THE RUAHINE. LONDON, August 23. The New Zealand Olympic competitors will sail for home by the Ruahine on September 4. SWIMMING. NEW .ZEALAND CHAMPIONSHIPS. The Wanganui Swimming Centre has agreed to the New Zealand championships this year being held in February, but considers that the question of dividing the junior and the intermediate championships from the senior should engage serious attention at the annual conference. It is contended that the position has been altered as a result of the championships being decided in January. While the first month of the year is suitable for the juniors and the intermediates, it i s not suitable for the seniors, who have to depend upon the open baths for training, and find it impossible to get fit in such a short period, as it is usually wet .and cold right up till Christmas.
