The purchase of a small plant for fighting oil fires was authorised by the Auckland Harbour Board at its last meeting (reports an exchange). The plant, which will be mounted on wheels, consists of two tanks from which alkali and acid solutions are forced by compressed air from a cylinder, the' union of the solution at a common nozzle at the end of the' hose lines from the tanks producing a foam which suppresses the oil flames. "When complete the plant will weigh half a ton. The equipment is intended for use on the waterfront and will the protection now given ,to . the board’s property by the Auckland Fire-Board. It will be used on small outbreaks where oil is burning.
