SCIENTIFIC RESEARCH.

ADVISORY OFFICER IN LONDON. WELLINGTON, May 4. Mr N. L. Wright, technical chemist to the Department of Scientific and industrial Research, has been appointed technical liaison officer for the depaitment in Great Britain. He will be stationed at London for a definite period. In his new capacity Mr Wright will investigate the latest processes and scientific control of the processes adopted in connection with such industries abroad as nave counterparts in New Zealand. His attention /lit be devoted in particular a problems affecting the meat, leather, bacon, and hides, and pelts industries. The course of his duties will bring him into tone t with the various research ssociations established under the Department of Scientific and Industrial Research in Greai Britain, and it will be part of his work to transmit information gained to New Zealand, where the technical staff of the Department of Scientific and Industrial Research will assist in introducing the improvements to local industries. In this way a practicall connection is expected to be effected between reseaich activities abroad and industries and r? search in New Zealand. It is realised by the authorities that in many industr .-s oversea processes are n use as a resit of recent scientific progress, which wo i! 1 prove beneficial if applied in the Dominion, and when the technique of industries is based on a level equivalent to that in the most advanced countries, the funds set apart for particular research in New Zealand can, it is contended, be useo to better advantage. Mr Wright’s in quiries will be inaugurated in the United States, which he will visit en route to the Old Country. Mr Wright was born in New Zealand, and was educated at Wellington College and Victoria University College. His first position was' on the staff of the Dominion Laboratory. He went to the war, and, following demobilisation in England, he joined the staff of the British Scientific and Industrial Research Department, where he remained for three years, receiving the diploma of the Imperial College for his work there. Later, Mr Wright joined the research staff of British Glues and Chemicals, and subsequently became associated with a large leather firm. Mr Wright, who was elected to the fellowship of the Institute of Chemistry before he returned to New Zealand, accepted 12 months ago the position of technical chemist to the Department of Scientific and Industrial Research here. During his stay in New Zealand he has been engaged on duties which includ’d investigation and survey of the industries of the Dominion.
