Not many people would think that it is possible to grow and ripen grapea out in the open in Invercargill, but a bunch brought to the Southland News office the other day established the fact. They were very fine specimens and quite ripe. Grown by Mr G. Miller at Avenal, they were not “ forced ” in any way. Planted against a fence, they received a large proportion of sunlight throughout the day. The bunch exhibited was one of about 30, all of very fair size and colour. One cannot go past motor salesmen and dealers for “ boost ” and popular advertising (says the Wanganui Chronicle). 6ne proprietor at a Wanganui service station has secured an original touch in a sign he places next to his bowsers on Saturdays. It reads: “No service tomorrow; fill up to-day." - On a recent Saturday two men—one a clergyman—were heard debating humorously the advisability of placing such a sign outside churches on Sundays. The idea was not without its practical benefits, as the clergyman conceded. An annual Government grant of £3OO for the purpose of combating the goat menace in the Egmont National Park is being sought by the board, which, at its quarterly meeting, decided to approach the Government in the matter (states the Taranaki Herald)." The forest, it is said, is menaceH by the ravages of goats, which are destroying the young growth rapidly. Any measures to be effective, members claimed, must extend over a period of years. ‘Men and dogs suitable for the purpose had to be trained to tha work.
