"While Mr R. C. Ongley was having some trouble at the Magistrate's Court in Taihape with a Maori in a judgment summons case, and was hampered by the Maori’s feigned inability to understand English, he suddenly said in suave tones. “Of course you understand English, de you not? ” The Maori was momentarily off guard, and replied, amid loud laughter, “ No, I am afraid I do not! ”
