WALLACETOWN STOCK SALE. . INVERCARGILL, May 1. fortnightly Wallacetown stock sale was held on Tuesday, when there w r as a good yarding of all sections, and a good attendance of buyers. A feature of the sale was a marked increase in the demand for fat lambs, good quality lots selling at record prices, and as much as 40s being obtained tor choice entries Fat sheep declined slightly as compared with the previous sale, as did fat cattle. Store sheep and cattle were in good demand and good prices ruled. Store Cattle.—There was a smaller yarding, but the sale in this section was on a par with previous fixtures. The yarding comprised ail classes, and prices ranged as foilow: —Two and a-half year to three-year-old steers, £7 10s to £8; 18 months to two-year-old steers, £5 to £6 2s 6d; yearling to 18-months steers, £3 5s to £5; good empty heifers. £4 15s to £5 10s; poor conditioned sorts, £3 5s to £4 2s 6d; wellbred heifer calves, £2 9s; good conditioned empty cows. £3 15s to £4 ss; aged and poor conditioned sorts, £1 to £2 10s. dairy cows yarded were a mixed and inferior lot and realised prices in accordance with quality. Good springing heifers close to profit realised £6 10s to £B. Fat Cattle.—The yarding was a large one and comprised a few well-finished bullocks with a large proportion of medium and inferior cows and heifers. Prices showed a reduction from last sale with the exception of heifers and good beef, which quite held the values of the last sale. A few good vealers were yarded and these met fair demand. Extra prime bullocks realised up to £l9; medium weights, from £l3 10s to £l5 10s; lighter sorts, down to £5 10s; prime cows, up to £lO 10s; mediumweights. £6 to £8; boners, down to £3 10s; good vealers, £1 10s to £2 ss; with runners up to £4 15s. Store Sheep.—There was a smaller yarding than at the previous sale, prices being quite equal to country sales. The range of prices was:—Two-tooth ewes, 33s 4d: good four and six-tooth ewes, 34s 6d ; good sound mouthed ewes, 27s 6d tq 295; good full and failing-mouthed ewes. 17s 6d to 20s 6d; poorer sorts, 13s to 15s 6d; aged and inferior sorts, 9s to Us 6d ; fair ewe lambs, 26s to 27s Id; good wether hoggets, 20s. A pen of medium two-tooth wethers were passed in at 265. Fat Sheep.—The yarding was a representative one, and comprised much better quality sheep than was the case at the previous sale. Some pens of good wethers were forward, and a fair number of well-finished ewes- The yarding showed an increase on that of a fortnight ago, - and those forward to-day were almost in excess of local requirements. The fat lamb yarding was a small one, 'and in many cases the lambs were very light weights. Good quality lots sold exceptionally well, and to-day’s prices must be considered the best given in Southland for many years. The fat sheep prices showed an all-round drop of about 2s per head compared with the last sale, and in the ewe section the drop was in excess of this. The bulk of the yarding was sold either at auction or by private treaty, but a fair number of lots was passed in at auction. Extra prime wethers realised up to 46s 3d; good butchers’ wethers from 33s to 38s; lighter sorts from 28s to 30s; prime heavy eWes up to 35s 3d; medium weights from 20s to 235; lighter sorts down to 18s; extra heavy lambs up to 40s; good freezing lambs from 30 s to 36s 3d; lighter sorts down to 255.

OAMARU, May 4. 3 he broken weather during the past week has had a somewhat depressing effect upon tho markets in Oamaru towards the end of the week. However, some activity was shown. Although the major portion of tho wheat crop has not yet been threshed, a fair number of sales have been made Tuscan has changed hands at 5s 7d to 5s 8d per bushel. Dreadnought 5s 6d. Sensation at 5s Bd, Hunters at 6s, and Velvet at 7s 3d all on trucks at country stations. The improvement in the oats market is being maintained. A grade Gartons have sold at 3s 3d. and B grade at 2s lid on trucks. Although there is a fair demand for oaten sheaf chaff not much has been offering. The quotation of £4 per ton on trucks is not sufficiently tempting. The transactions in fowl wheat have been restricted, as very little has come upon the market. One or two lines of Chevalier barley have changed hands at 3s 6d per bushel on trucks. A little business has been doing in potatoes on the basis of £5 per ton on trucks There is a fair demand for Partridge peas, but these are being held for better prices. Practically no business is reported in seeds. The live stock market has been dull in consequence of the unfavourable weather. Owing to the abundance of grass and the high prices ruling for wool and frozen meat very little store stock is under offer, the majority of the farmers desiring to hold all they possess. Forward wethers have sold privately at 25s 3d, full and failing-mouth ewes at 14s, fat lambs at 32s 6d, and fat owes at 21s sd. Good rape lambs have realised 295. The cattle market has been inactive though fat bullocks have sold at £l3 10s, prime heifers at £9, and prime cows ar from £6 to £7. Dairy cows coming to profit have changed hands at from £7 to £B. Pigs are still a drug in the market and the supply of weaners and slips is still : n excess of the demand. SOUTHLAND MARKET REPORT. (From Our Own Correspondent.) INVERCARGILL, May 5. During the week there has been considerable activity in the oats market, and values have increased somewhat rapidly, sales having been made yesterday at 4s for A grade Gartons, ’ f.0.b.. s.i., an advance of 3d during the week. B’s have by no means responded to the same extent. and for these buyers do not seem inclined to operate at anything over 3s

oj' or<4 inrfry circumstances quite 2d less than the equivalent to A’s. These prices are distinctly in excess of shipping values to the Old Country, and it is somewhat difficult to understand how such prices have been achieved by sellers. The inference is rather that speculators have been caught, and require to cover their May commitments. Growers are not offering anything considerable in the meantime, and it is’ fairly evident that our well-to-do farmers are now holding for a rise. Very little demand exists for chaff, and the market remains firm at £4 per ton for prime quality on trucks, country sidings. A little bit of a spurt was caused during the last fortnight by some demand from the Lakes, district, merchants and farmers deeming it advisable to get in supplies ere winter sets in, this being necessary on. account of the drought conditions existing during the summer months. . The ryegrass market is now altogether inactive, and little or no improvement can be looked for before the spring. Nominal values are from 4s 10d to 5s 2d per bushel for 271 b to 301 b weight machinedressed seed. During the week a fair amount of business in Chewing’s fescue has been done with northern merchants at 7£d per lb, f.0.b., for good germinating lines weighing 241 b, heavier and high germinating lots are nominally worth 8d per lb. Some sales of crested dogstail have taken place similarly through the week to northern buyers at from 8d for good ordinary, to Bid for prime seed of high germination, and lines of bright colour. Dark seed is difficult to quit. The stock market report for the past week is much oo a, par y.’ith the previous one. s* at cattle and fat sheep have been offering freely, and notwithstanding this, prices have held fairly firm. The yard’ ing at Wallacetown on Tuesday was a large one in both the fat cattle and fat sheep sections, and although prices were slightly easier a good sale resulted. Store sheep are still selling well, but the yardings are falling away, and another few weeks will see the busy time over for another season.
