INTOXICATED MOTORIST.
TITLED MAN IN TROUBLE. AUCKLAND, May 2. Sir Graeme Duncan Power SinclairLockhart, Bart., aged, 31 years, was fined £5O at the Police Court to-day for being intoxicated while in charge of a motor car last evening, and his driving license was cancelled for 12 months. The accused was not present in the court when his name was called, and Mr R. A. Singer, who appeared for him, entered a plea of guilty. Senior Sergeant Cummings said that the accused and another man, who was arrested later for drunkenness, were seen coming from the neighbourhood of the Victoria Hotel shortly after 10 o'clock last evening. Lockhart had difficulty in starting the car, and after it had started it stopped a short distance down Victoria street. When it reached Queen street a constable saw that the accused was too intoxicated to have charge of the car. Mr Singer said that the medical report showed that the accused was intoxicated, but he was not drunk enough to be arrested had he been walking. The Magistrate (Mr F. K. Hunt) : Why is he not in court? He has not answered his bail. I could send him to prison for 12 months. Mr Singer: He is at my office. I can get him in two minutes. Mr Hunt: This has happened twice now. The next time I will adjourn the case until the man is here. The Magistrate then imposed the penalty.
