QUINNAT SALMON.
ISSUE OF NETTING LICENSES. OFFICIAL REPLY TO CRITICISM. "WELLINGTON, May 5. Regarding the statements made in the South Island that the netting of quinnat salmon by the Marine Department and the issue of private licenses were somewhat premature in view of the fact that I the salmon were still becoming established, Mr A. E. Hefford, chief inspector ■ of fisheries, says the talk about unrestricted netting is nonsense. Netting had r not been proved to diminish the stock. The department must consider the utilisation of fishing for the general good of the public, and it would naturally endeavour ! to hold the balance fairly between the commercial consideration and the sport* , ing interests.
