THE MASSEY MEMORIAL.
■». ACCEPTANCE OF TENDER. WELLINGTON, May 5. The Prime Minister' (Mr J. G. Coates) stated yesterday that the tender of Messrs Hansford and Mills, of Wellington, had been accepted for the erection of the Massey memorial at Point Halswell. The amount of the successful tender is £9995, which is within the architect’s estimate. The contract time for completion of the work is six months. Considerable progress has already been made in levelling the site and removing a portion of the hill which would have obscured a clear view of the memorial from the harbour. This work has provided employment for a large number of men. The contract stipulates the use of New Zealand white marble from the Kairuru quarries at Takaka, in the Nelson district, and also for Coromandel granite for the base of the circular screen at the northern end of the memorial. The third anniversary of Mr Massey’s death falls on Thursday.
