PACKING OF VEGETABLES.
CHINESE GARDENER FINED. WELLINGTON, March' 30. Failure to pack sacks of potatoes ini such a way as to give a fair idea of the size, maturity, and condition < f the contents was alleged against Sun Hing Lee, market gardener, of Ohau. The fruit inspector gave evidence that the accused had already received a warning notice for a previous offence. The effect of another offender >eing fined recently was quickly reflected on the Wellington market > a general improvement in the packing of vegetables. The Chinese, said the inspector, were not the only offenders, and several warning notices had been sent to European market gardeners. Counsel for the defendant said that the actual- packing was carried out by Maoris, under the supervision of another Chinese. A fine of £lO was imposed.
