AN IMPROVED SHOW.

YOUNG BIRDS AND PETS. SIXTEENTH ANNUAL EXHIBITION. The most pleasing feature of the sixteenth annual young bird show, which opened in Fullers’ Hall on Friday was the marked increase in the total number of entries, and the Dunedin Specialists’ Young Bird Club is to be congratulated on the success of its efforts. A popular addition to this year’s catalogue is the cooking section, which has. provided a good display of home baking. The number and variety of entries must be considered satisfactory in view of the fact that this is the first occasion on which they have been solicited. The section devoted to children’s and domestic pets was a large and interesting one, in which the pet rabbits were outstanding. This section invariably attracts a large proportion of the interested public, and the 1928 show is worthy of patronage on account of the pets alone. The late season has shown its effect in the standard of the poultry exhibits, many of which, though fair in quality, were .not properly ready. In the opinion of the judge, Mi- P. C. Sinclair, only the special prize winners were outstanding birds', while the utility class, in his opinion, seemed to be marred by- the fact that the breeders were getting birds that were too small. A certain size should be selected and maintained. The .White Leghorns constitute a fair class, in which the prize pullet stands out on its own, while the same applies to the Rhode Island Reds, among which the prize cockerel is a bird of special merit. The exhibits of bantams form a class that could well be improved in numbers, although the birds, taken as a whole, are a good average lot. To the discredit of local breeders it must be recorded that the majority of entries are from Southland, South Canterbury, and other outside districts, but probably the late and unsuitable breeding season has been responsible for the apparent apathy in Dunedin. The prize winners, particularly in the special award classes, are well produced and in good condition. The following are the results of the judging;—
