PROPULSION OF LIFEBOATS.

HAND-LEVERS INSTEAD OF OARS. LONDON, February 8. An interesting innovation I’3 being made in the lifeboats of the new ships being built for the New Zealand Shipping Company. These boats will have hand-lever propelling gear instead of oars. Lifeboats so equipped are being adopted by an ever-increasing number of steamship companies, as it permits not only of an increase in their carrying capacity—thus adding to their value in cases of emergency—but enables them to be manoeuvred, by persons unacquainted with oarsmanship. They have been approved by the Board of Trade.
