STOKEHOLD VENDETTA.
LASCARS AT LOGGERHEADS. GISBORNE, March 11. The liner Argyllshire, which is lying in the bay, was the scene of some excitement last evening, and but for the intervention of the chief steward, Mr Palatier. one of the Lascar crew might have lost his life. Mr Palatier heard a noise of scuffling near the stokehold about 9.50 p.tn., and on investigation he found a Lascar named Abdool Nabee, a member of the saloon staff, being seriously assaulted by a gang of Lascars from the stokehold It was allegecLby the firemen that Abdoo! Nabee had assaulted a boy; but Abdool denies the allegation, and say that he was enticed down to the stokehold. The officers intervened and took charge of Abdool for the night, and in the morning the police launch went out and brought the man ashore, as it was feared that his life would be endangered. Mainly for his own protection, Abdool was taken to the police station and charged with common assault.
