TRIAL OF ACCUSED OPENED. A PLEA GF NOT GUILTY. MELBOURNE, March 7. The trial of Griggs was commenced at Sale, accused pleading not guilty. The Crown Prosecutor, in opening the case, said that the evidence would show that accused’s wife died of arsenical poisoning, and that large quantities of arsenic wefe kept in places frequented by the accused. The medical evidence would show that there were 15£gr of arsenic in the body, and 3gr were enough to cause death. Further, it would b© proved that at least two doses were administered. After being locked up all night, the jury in tbe Griggs’ trial notified the judge that it was unable to agree. It was discharged, and Griggs was remanded until April 16. There were remarkable scenes outside the courthouse, great crowds awaiting the verdict.
