OAMARU MARKETS. OAMARU, March 2. The past week has shown a fair amount faf animation in the grain market. Very good samples of wheat have been placed under offer, but the business done has been comparatively small, as owners have not been prepared to accept the prices offering. Sales of Hunter’s wheat have been made at 6s per bushel, but the demand for the variety has eased, and the best price offering yesterday was 5s lOd per bushel. Several lines of Sensation have been placed at from 5s 5d to 5s 6d per bushel, while Dreadnought has been sold in fair quantities at 5s 6d per bushel, free on trucks. Oats have, been offering freely, but few transactions are reported. The nominal price is 2s lOd per bushel for A grade Gardons, but growers are asking 3s. One line of fair quality was sold at 2s lOd r~ per bushel. , Barley continues to be a drug in the market. The best price that is offering for Chevalier is 3s 9d per bushel, but this does not appeal to the growers. Oaten sheaf chaff has been offering, but is not in strong request. The nominal value is £5 per ton. Potatoes are beginning to come upon the market, and one line was sold at £5 10s per ton. Little business has been done in grass seeds. A line of Western Wolths sold at 2s 3d, and cocksfoot was taken in fair quantities at last week’s prices. The live stock market has been comparatively dull. Forward deliveries are still being made, but the demand for store ewes is now as active as it usually is at this period of the year. The reason probably is that the pastures and root crops are not as assured as in former years. Sales of rape lambs have been made at 22s 9d, cull lambs (mixed sexes) at 15s, and small hill two-tooth ewes at 30s. Fat lambs are selling’at schedule prices, and fat wethers at a price on a par with that ruling at Burnside. Ox beef has not been offered in any quantity, but heifer and cow beef has .gold at ’Burnside equivalents Dairy cows are. in limited demand, though winter calvers have sold at prices up to £7 per head.

Pigs have shown little change. Good weaners have sold at 15s to 20s, and stores at last week’s rates. SOUTHLAND MARKET REPORT(From Our Own Correspondent.; INVERCARGILL, March 3. GRAIN. Oats.—Recently this market has been somewhat unstable. A week or 10 days back oats were sold for prompt delivery, A’s as high as 3s Bd, for forward delivery 7d, but now North Island sellers are on the market quoting forward A’s down to 3s 6d, while it is even rumoured that ci aro prepared to do business at 3s s£d. Crops Southland certainly do not warrant these reduced figures, but it is understood the yield in Canterbury is distinctly higher than was considered possible. Locally, our merchants are not much interested apparently in these figures, as growers are obtaining on trucks, their siding, more than the equivalent of f.o.b. value. The bulk of our oats in Southland will be bright on account of dry conditions, but it is considered A’s will be rather scarce, as many lots will not go the required weight. Chaff.- This is still maintained at the old level of £4 5s per ton, on trucks, grower’s siding, for prime quality. Ryegrass.—This market is in a somewhat unstable condition due to erroneous reports of prices in the north and to one or two sales having been made at high figures for what were actually prime lots. The basis of values between merchants may be taken as from 4s 6d to 4s 8d per bushel for machine dressed seed with a germination of 85 per cent, weighing 281 b per bushel. Prices to growers are round about 3s per bushel for ordinary lots, up to 3s 3d for specially well-milled heavyweight seed. Crested Dogstail.—A fair amount has been turned over to outside merchants for forward delivery at prices varying from 8d to Bjd per lb for machine dressed, brightcoloured seed with a germination of 95 per cent. In many cases the impression is that as time goes on even this price will be reduced. Chewings'Fescue is very much in the same position, though on account of it being a considerable quantity of light-weight seed it is not anticipated there will be any drop in price, as the demand fo r high quality seed will almost certainly absorb all that is available. Any fluctuation in values will be in respect to light-weight seed Values are much the same as for crested dogstail. STOCK REPORT. The stock market at the present time is firm for all classes offering. Fat cattle are offering in fair numbers and the market may be considered good for this period of the year. Fat sheep are also coming forward freely, and prices are firm at late quotations. Store sheep are now coming into the yards in large numbers, and the market for all classes is good, more especially for young ewes and forward lambs. Store cattle are making good money, and any,- coming into the yards realise prices winch must be satisfactory to the vendors. Fat Cattle.—Heavy prime bullocks, £l2 to £l4 10s; medium weight do, £lO to £ll 15s; prime heavy heifers £8 15s to £lO 10s; medium do, £7 to £8 ss; prime heavy cows, £9 to £lO 10s; medium do, £6 10s to £8; vealers, to 30s; runners, to £3 10s. Fat Sheep.—Heavy prime wethers, 32s to 345; medium do, 28s 6d to 30s 6d; prime heavy ewes, 24s 6d to 26s 6d; medium do, 18s 6d to 20s; lighter do, to 13s 6d; prime heavy lambs, 30s to 32s 6d; prime medium do, 27s to 28s 6d; lighter do, to 255. Store Sheep.—Wether lambs, 18s to> 20s; mixed-sex lambs, 20s to 22s 6d; ewe lambs, 24s to 26s 6d; two-tooth ewes, 30s to 365; two-tooth wethers, 22s 6d to 265; sound-mouthed ewes, to 30s. Store Cattle. —Three-year steers, £8 10s to £10; two-year do, £6 10s to £7 10s; yearling steers, £4 to £5 10s; calves, 35s to £2 10s.
