EXERCISE OF COUNCIL’S OPTION.

MINISTER EXPRESSES SATISFAC TION.

WELLINGTON. August 23. In regard to the decision of the Palmerston North Borough Council to exercise its. option over the MTlardy property, the Minister of Agriculture (Mr 0. J. Hawken) informed a reporter to-day that he was quite satisfied. He could' quite understand the concern of the council when such a valuable gift was involved, but he was satisfied that the council had acted wisely in handing the property' over to the Government. “

FARM MANAGER APPOINTED. PALMERSTON N.. August 24. Mr P. J. M’Culloch. senior Government agricultural instructor for the Wellington and Southern Hawke’s Bay districts, has been appointed farm manager of the Massey Agricultural College.

During the last six weeks much work has been done on the propei-ty for the college, extensive draining and ploughing has been carried out, and much fencing done. A flock of sheep and several pedigree cattle are already on the property. In connection with the action of the Government last week in ceasing work on the place, this only applied, to preparations for the erection of a milking shed and a dairyman’s cottage, also a drain from the M'Hardy property to tho Tiritea stream, this being a very small portion of the work on the estate.
