LOGAN PARK.
IMPROVING UNIVERSITY GROUND. GIFT BY SIB LOUIS BARNETT. At the meeting of the University Council on Tuesday afternoon a letter was received from Sir Louis Barnett, in which he further demonstrated his interest in the Otago University and the city of Dunedin. Sir Louis Barnett's letter was as follows:—“1 have for a long time cherished the desire to make a contribution of £lOOO to the fund for the formation of a playing field at Logan Park that will be worthy of the University and a benefit to the present and succeeding generations of my fellow-students. 1 have pleasure, therefore, in now forwarding as a first instalment the sum of £250 for that object. In view of the present unemployment distress I thought it better to send this instalment now rather than wait until I was in a position to forward the full amount. The needs of our University are many and pressing, but I hope that first one and then another may be provided for, with the help of those who, like myself, are gratefully impressed with its splendid record of service to the community. With my best wishes for the welfare and progress of the Otago University, for the establishment of more residential hostels, and generally for more liberal financial support. . , At the conclusion of the reading of the letter members expressed their appreciation by general applause. The Vice-chancellor (Mr Morrell) said that the contribution had been enhanced in his eyes by the generous and feeling terms of the letter. Sir Louis showed a shining example in regard to his Alma Mater and they might hope that this spirit would be followed by other graduates of their University. He would move that the council tender its warmest thanks for Sir Louis’s generous gift, and for his continued interest in his old University.— (Applause.) The motion was then formally put and carried amidst applause.
