. Laughter is to be found in every issue of Humour, and the proprietors have lately given it additional tests and joke competitions.

The Finnish four-masted barque Hougomont, which recently discharged in the Royal Victoria Dock, makes an effective cover design on the July number of the P.L.A. Monthly, the official organ of the Port of London Authority. Articles in the same number include “ What London Stores for the World: Rubber and Balata”; “The Royal Observatory, Greenwich,” and “ Tilbury Dock Improvements.”

The Empire Fellowship for July is to hand. It contains a special signed portrait of H.R.H. Prince Henry, who is now taking an active part in public affairs, and has original articles on the subjects of “ Our Young Empire Builders,” “ South Africa and the Flag,” “ Giving the Children a Chance,” “An Empire Sermon ” and other such subjects. “ The Great Gumme-Nerve-Break Bowler ” is the title of an interesting short story in the issue.

The August number of the N.Z. Scotsman, with which is incorporated the Scottish New Zealander and the N.Z. Scot, is as usual interesting and pleasant to read. Its articles include “ Wairarapa Caledonian Society: a Retrospect,” “Glasgow’s First Photographer,” “ Burns Autographs: The Great Adam Collection Sold,” “A Great Crusade: Scots Memorial at Jerusalem,” “ The Coldstream Guards,” “ White Heather: Origin in Ancient Legend,” “ Flora Macdonald: Her Life Romance,” “Reel o’ Tulloch: Origin of a Famous Highland Dance,” etc.

In connection with Australian and New Zealand Authors’ Week, to be held from September 12 to 19, we have received from the N.S.W. Bookstall Company, Limited, a brochure from which is available much interesting matter regarding the efforts of the late A. C. Rowlandson, pioneer publisher of Australian novels, as well as information dealing with various Australian authors. A portrait of Mr Rowlandson, a foreword of appreciation of his work by R. Wynn, articles by prominent literary men on the subject of the New South Wales Bookstall Books and their publisher, a list of authors and their books, and two spirited pen-and-ink sketches complete an interesting table of contents.

The August issue of Aussie is a special racing ("Gee Gee") number, and from its attractive cover design to the last page is full of irresistible humour. While motor tyres are blotting out the hoof marks of the Dobbins, the Gloamings aie still going strong, so in this issue of Aussie the artists and write: s who contribute to the magazine from every letter box in Australia and New Zealand have laughed mainly with the racehorse, though good old Dobbin has not been altogether neglected.

Lovely pictures characterise the August issue of the Home, the Australian journal of quality edited by Sydney Ure Smith and Leon Gellert. A House and Garden | number, its photog’-aphs are delights to ' the eye of the beholder, novelty, artistry, and beauty vying with each other in claiming first place o' them all. ” The Spirit of the Garden,” ” Snapped,” “ The House of Frederick Mann, Esq.,” and “ Sermons in Stone ” are particularly fine. Articles such ss “The Gai den in Relation to the House,” “ Botanical Questionnaire.” “ Looking in at LiEiput,” also deal with the chief subject of the issue. For the rest, photographs of charming women iu society, on the stage, at home | and iu the professions make an appeal to the taste, while the usual sections on fashion, personal and social doings, children and upper schools, short stories, poems, and a serial make interesting reading. “ Paris Nights and Days,” by Isabel Ramsay, is a new letter from the French capital describing the tremors great and small which liave been recorded recently on the social seismograph.
