OFFENDED DIGNITY.
MAYOR’S CHILDISH ACTION. AUCKLAND, August 18. The Avondale Borough Council met last evening, but before adopting the usual procedure of declaring the meeting open and moving the confirmation of the minutes, the Mayor (Mr H. Tiarks) announced that he was not there to transact any business. The time had arrived when there would be a parting of the ways. The poll of the electors taken last Saturday, when amalgamation with the city was carried by such an overwhelming majority was a vote of no-confidenco in the mayor and council, and that they could not longer satisfactorily administer the affairs of the borough. He could not retain the mayoral chair and his selfrespect at the same time. Therefore, he would tender his resignation forthwith. Cr J. V. Ricsterer also announced his intention of tendering his resignation, and Crs A. Edmiston and W. Pendlebury also handed in their resignations. Commenting editorially on the matter, the New Zealand Herald says that the mayor’s action is more childish than dignified. Business may be delayed until elections are held to fill the four vacancies. Amalgamation takes effect from March 31.
