“BUY BRITISH.”

EMPIRE COOKERY. (From Our Own Correspondent.) T , LONDON, July 1. Lady Alexander, tbrpugh the press, offers a suggestion to housewives, in the interests of Empire trade. I here are 25,000,000 in this country, and they do 94 per cent, of the buying. In a‘Sense then the success or failure of the ‘buy British” campaign rests with our housekeepers. "Now (she writes) the Empire Marketing Board has just offered a challenge cup of a 100 guineas to the shop which makes the best display of British goods during the week of the big- advertising convention and exhibition in London next month. Why not bring the enthusiasm nearer home by offering prizes or some diploma to those Britisn housewives who use only British-grown foods in their kitchens? Why not run a national competition for Empire cookery? The Duchess of York has given a lead, I understand, by giving instructions that only Australian apples be used in her household during their season from April to August, New Zealand honey, and so on, and it seems to me that this is an ■example which should be followed in every British home. Cleverer brains than mine could no doubt evolve a definite scheme—why not even an order of patriotic housekeepers on the frothblowers’ lines?—but as it is the women who are to change ‘buy British’ from a slogan into a habit, I think they should be entitled to recognition for tlieir good work.’’ °
