TIMBER WORKERS.

COMPENSATION FOR ACCIDENTS. WELLINGTON, August 4. The Timber Workers’ Federation conference to-day passed the following re mits: — That the Government be urged at once to bring about a reciprocal arrangement in regard to workers’ compensation between , Tasmania and New Zealand. That the Workers’ Compensation Act bo amended to make provision for full compensation in the event of a worker being killed while on the property of his employer, so long as it is during working hours, whether he is doing the actual work he is engaged to perform or otherwise.

That the second schedule of the Act be amended to provide for the compensation of partial loss which is not provided for in the present Act, and which is to be paid for on a pro rata basis. That the Act be amended to allow of reasonable hospital and medical expenses up to £25 where necessary in case of accidents.

The Government, was urged to take over all insurance risks under the Compensation Act with a view to the reduction of premiums. It was decided to increase the capitation fees by Is per member to provide funds for organising the North Island timber workers and unemployed through the Alliance of Labour, and to urge unions to embody in awards a clause making compulsory the provision of an am bulance chest by employers. It was also decided to request the Government to appoint two practical workers from the federation for both islands to install all wood-working machinery in an endeavour to minimise accidents.
