OAMARU MARKETS. (From Our Own Correspondent.)

OAMARU, July 29. Owing to the continued wet weather of the past week, the cereal market in North Otago has been practically dead. Transport has been quite out of the question. The quantity of wheat, oats, and barlev now held by farmers is exceedingly small. One or two small parcels of wheat have been sold for delivery when weather permits. The prices are on a par with those quoted last week. The wheat remaining in farmers’ hands is chiefly Tuscan and Dreadnought.

No transactions in oats are reported. Several of those who have not sold are feeding their oats to stock. Barley has been cleaned up tor the season, with the result that no business has taken place.

Oaten sheaf chaff is in small supply. A line or two have been sold at from £3 10s to £3 12s 6d per ton, on trucks. Fowl wheat has been selling at from 6s 2d to 6s 4d per bushel. There is practically none of last season’s potatoes on the market, and local merchants are drawing supplies from the north, chiefly from Willowbridge, where there are a good many tons still in the pits. Prices have shown a hardening tendency. A' few small parcels of ryegrass have changed hands at prices ranging, according to quality, from 4s down to 3s per bushel.

The live stock niarket has shown no animation. There is a good demand for small lines of stere sheep, but few are offering. Fat wethers, of which there are few in the district, are quoted at from 40s to 50s, according to weight. Full and failingmouth ewes have sold at 20s. and cull ewes at 10s.

Practically no fat cattle are offering in the district. The price of ox beef in still high, reaching 40s per 1001 b. while heifer beef is quoted at 365, and cow beef at 255.

A fair demand exists for dairy cows coming to profit, and a few sales have been made at prices ranging from £6 to £lO per head, according to quality. Weaner pigs are in good request, but transactions have been almost impossible on account of the weather.

SOUTHLAND MARKET REPORT. (From Our Own Corueseondent.) INVEP.C xP.GILL, July 30. STOCK. The stock market at present shows a keen inquiry for all classes and prices are firm .tat sheep are selling well, and the prices realised at auction and privately must be satisfactory to the vendors. With a good

inquiry from the north for heavy wethers and ewes every week sees our sheep leaving the district, consequently prices have the appearance of being firm for some time. Fat cattle values are much the same as for some time back with a firming tendency. Store sheep are selling well with a good inquiry, and the prices paid to-day show an'advance of 3s to 4s on the same class of sheep a month back. Store cattle are selling well now especially steers, anji any lines offering are soon quitted. Fat Catte.—Prime heavy bullocks, £l3 15s to £18; medium weight bullocks, £lO 10s to £l2 10s; prime heavy heifers, £9 to £11; medium heifers, £7 10s to £8 15s; prime heavy cows, £9 10s to £lO 15s; medium cows, £7 to £8 10s; vcalers, 355; runners to £3 10s; prime ox beef, to 33s per 1001 b; prime heifer beef, 30s; cow beef, 25s per 1001 b. GRAIN. Oats. —We have the completion of export orders to Sydney and Victoria. This market has been somewhat lifeless for the last fortnight, though only insofar as grade oats are concerned. The basis of values is still maintained at A’s 3s 6d, B’s 3s 3d, for which the former only is being quoted for by Australia. For the internal trade, northern buyers are only prepared to offer prices somewhat like 2d less than those quoted. Such tactics are fortunately based on an attempt to bring down values, or in the hope that some Australian business may come their way. With tho demand now setting in for seed oats, it is evident that A’s, which alone are suitable for this purpose, are getting on the short side, and our buyers in the near future will have to confine their operations in grade oats to B’s. At present little business is being done with northern buyers in anything other than undergrade oats and Duns. The latter are saleable at from 3s 8d to 3s lOd for ordinary farmer’s dressed lots, to 4s and 4s 3d for machine dressed, the price depending on weight and quality. Ryegrass.—This market is still in an almost stagnant position insofar as business with outside centres is concerned, while little or nothing whatever is being supplied by growers. Basis of values for seed of high germinating quality is round about 3s lOd for 281 b machine dressed seed. Chaff.—Dealers are confined entirely to the local trade. Prices to growers range from £3 10s per ton on trucks for prime quality, down to £2 15s for low, flaky lines.
