AUCKLAND TOPICS.

By

A few days;’ fine weather has i csulted in a little extra activity at Ellerslie. Several of the two-year-olds have been sent along a little faster, but up to date nothing of a time-making nature has been attempted. The jumpers arc beginning to make their presence felt, and on Thursday Sea Comet, Importer, Simplicitas, and Royal Bonus all jumped hurdles well- They are, however, not a good lot, and we may have to look beyond them for winners at Pakuranga. Several seasons ago J. C. and P. S. Gleeson sent the English mare Maria of Hillford on a visit to Valais, but ill-luck pursued the venture, as she missed the first season and died before foaling in the second. Nothing daunted, the Auckland sportsmen intend to try again- and they have booked Alarriage Bell to the leading Australian sire. She is a rising four-year-old by Tea Tray from Gold Treasure" the dam of Amythas. It was intended to send Marriage Bell across on Friday, and it is hoped that the mating will be attended with better results than in the case of Mari;, of Hereford. The English horse Tidal returned from Sydney on Tuesday. Ho developed a. cold, and N. Cunningham sent him back without having a race. Beau Cavalier. Kawini. Zircon, and Royal Form were the Auckland horses sent from Trentham to Riccarton for the Grand National meeting. R. Hannon brought his team back to Cambridge, but there is a possibility that. Lord Star and York Abbey may be sent back to race at Riccarton. A. AFDonald. who rode Kawini in the Wellington Steeplechase, will have the mount on that horse in the Grand National Si eeplecbnsc. Air W. Scholium's team. True Blood, Royal Biocd, Golden Autumn, and White Wings, were booked to leave for Sydney in charge of their trainer, It . Kirk, on Fridav.

J. Anderton sold the veteran Passionate after the Wellington meeting, and he is now a member of A. Godfrey's team at Trentham.

The Fox. who made onlv one appearance at two years old, when he ran second to Prince Ctto, has been taken up again by J. Lambers. He is a nice galloper, who should win races even if he docs not reach the highest class. An early maiden should prove easy for one capable of running second in a two-year-old race at The Tea Tray youngster. Nankin Blue, looks as forward as any two-year-old at Ellerslie. There is not much of this juvenile, and if be is to prove a success under silk, it may be in the early part of the new season rather than later when tho bigger ones are coming to maturity.

J- J- Jamieson returned from Sydney on 1 uesday after an unsuccessful venture on the other side. The Immigrant went wroiw. 1 mice Atto was injured in his first race, and the other member, Le Chotieas, notched two seconds, it being held m some quarters that he raced unluckily, lhe two-year-old Prince Atto is on the mend, and will be all right for spring racing. ° Dclightnient is not to race at Riccarton. He was taken to Te Rapa after ’•ucin.j*' at Trentham, and will remain there to bo prepared for the Pakuranga Hunt meeting.
