AUSTRALIAN WARSHIPS.
SAVE THE SYDNEY. (From Ojr Own Correspondent-) SYDNEY, February 17. The careers of H.M.A.S. Sydney and H.M.A.S. Adelaide are nearly ended. Soon they will be too much out of date to remain with the Australian fleet. Considering the wonderful historic interest attaching to the Sydney from the Australian point of view, it seems a deplorable thing that she should share the fate of H.M.A.S. Australia, and be sent to the bottom of the ocean. The feeling here is very intense concerning the matter. Though the Returned Soldiers’ League was unsuccessful in its endeavours to prevent the destruction of the Australia, there seems no reason why the Federal Government should not yield to its entreaty that the cruiser Sydney should be preserved as a national memorial for Australia. So far it is not known how successful this appeal is likely to be. All the information given is that the authorities propose to break the Sydney up in England.
