Janet Preston Kelly, a waitress of Wairoa, claimed £7OO for alleged breach of promise from John Bennett Cook, an auctioneer. The special damages claimed totalled £5OO, and £2OO was sought as the cost of clothes purchased for the wedding. During the hearing of the case plaintiff admitted that she would be satisfied if £l5O were received, and Mr Justice Ostler awarded that amount.
