A DRUNKEN MOTORIST.

DRIVES ON A FOOTPATH. FINED AND LICENSE SUSPENDED. WELLINGTON, March 1. Drunkenness while he was in charge of a motor ear in Mein street last evening was admitted by Ernest Henry Williams, a mechanic, aged 35, in the Magistrate's Court to-day. Sub-inspector Harvey stated that the accused drove his car on to the footpath in Mein street shortly before 9 o’clock last evening, and that while he was attempting to drive off again, he backed into a telegraph post. A constable coming along, and noticing that he was drunk, arrested him. Williams was a single man, a mechanic by trade, and nothing was previously known against him. Mr As J. Mazcngarb, who appeared for Williams, said his client lived at Masterton, and supported his father and two sisters. While he was motoring to Wellington he picked up a man at the Hutt, and gave him a lift to the city. This man gave him a drink from a bottle of whisky. He was not used to drinking, and it affected him. In view of the fact that his client used his motor car in connection with his work counsel asked that his license be not suspended. Mr E. Page, S.M., imposed a fine of £l5, and suspended Williams’s license for six months. One week was allowed in which to find the money.
