CRUELTY TO ANIMALS.

- r THE OTAGO SOCIETY. A meeting of the- Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals was held on Tuesday afternoon and was attended by the Rev. W. Saunders (chairman), Mrs and Miss Porteous, Messrs W. F. Sligo, P. Johnston. A. D. Sutherland, and J. M'Gregor. Inspector Craig was also present. A letter was received from the town clerk replying to the society’s complaint in regard to the working of a horse in Rattray street and stating that the matter' was being investigated. The matter arose from a report at a previous meeting by Mr Sligo, who said that he had seen this horse endeavouring to take from St. Joseph’s Cathedral to the bottom of Rattray street a load that was manifestly too much for it, and that the cart had no brakes of any kind. The driver had tni him that it was to fit brakes to these drays. According to the town clerk’s letter, these drays had been in use for years. Mr Sligor"That’s no reason why they should be continued. It is an unreasonable thing to expect a horse to hold that load back -from the Cathedral to the bottom of the'street. I might say that there were, others who remarl <_d about it at the time. It vas eventually decided to write asking the town clerk to advise the society of the . result of the investigation as to the advisability of fitting a brake.
