RACING IN NEW ZEALAND.

FORBURY PARK SUMMER MEETING. First Day.—Thursday, January 27. The Forbury Park Trotting Club opened its summer meeting in perfect weather. The attendance appeared to be very good for what really amounted to an off day, and the card supplied some rather interesting racing and close finishes. The track provided fairly good going, but the foothold was on the slow side, and several of the winners won outside their handicaps. Backers confined their attention principally to Golden Devon and Sea Pearl in the Dunedin Cup, but neither of them reached the major placings, which Loganwood and Parkwood split by the narrowest of margins. The judge also had some difficulty over the King George Handicap, in which he failed to separate Honour Bright and Jolly Chimes. As usual in such cases, doubts were cast on the judge’s decision, but only one can give an accurate verdict, and that is the man in the official line with the winning post. It must be said that the day’s sport created a very favourable impression, particularly with some visitors from Australia and elsewhere, who expressed their great appreciation of the club’s hospitality as well as the pleasure of seeing some really good light-harness racing. The horses comprising the field for the Vauxhall Handicap for trotters acting under saddle gave an indifferent exhibition, as most of them went to breaks during the race. J. M’Lennan kept Hawkesbury’s Pride to a level gait and won well. Both Ben Logan and Great Elect broke when threatening danger half a furlong from home. Mountain Chimes began well in the Electric Handicap, and made all the running until Grey Cloud measured him off under pressure in the final furlong. Reta looked to hold a chance when racing with the leaders about three furlongs from home, but put in a bad break. Honour Bright and Berenice both went fair races, but none of the placed lot were capable of going equal to the class in which they were engaged. Elzear outclassed the opposition in the Musselburgh Handicap, and obviously had the race won a lap from home. Nelson M'Kinney was with the winner at one stage of the journey, and Avalanche, after breaking up in the first part of the race, appeared to hold a good -hanee of getting second, but tired in the last half-furlong, and both Real Lady and Engagement beat him home.

Bessie Logan and Nelson Derby were struck out of the Dunedin Cup, and this left a field of 12 to face the starter. Backers shot a bit wide of the mark in the betting, as Loganwood, who beat P-rkwood by the narrowest of margins, was one of the rank outsiders of the field. When sent away they began well, except Jack Potts, who mixed when asked to get busy. Parkwood made most of the running in a close-running field, and when St. Maura broke about three furlongs from home she interfered with Black Admiral and Logan Chief. Golden Devon was with the leader, and Loganwood picked up a handy position early in the race. Parkwood led into the straight from Loganwood and Sea Pearl, who was running a bit wide." Riddle began to get anxious halfway up the straight with Parkwood, and had his horse under pressure to resist a challenge from Loganwood, who, however, just managed to catch the judge’s eye. Sea Pearl was nearly two lengths away, and then came Jack Potts, Trenand, Ouimet, and Golden Devon. They went the first half in Imin 11 2-ssec, a mile in 2min 21see, and 12 furlongs in 3min 28 3-ssec. The silver cup attached to the race was presented by Miss lona Irwin, and the presentation created a round of applause, which became renewed when Mr G. W. Dransfield, the owner of the winner, returned thanks for the receipt of the trophy. One of the largest fields on record faced the starter in the Southland Handicap, for which 32 went to the post. The big field was fairlv set when sent away, and amongst those that failed to go were Red Chequer and Anditress. Bridget Pointer and Spring Note struck trouble early in the race, as they both smashed their sulkies, and O. Reed received a round of applause for the plucky manner in which he stuck to Spring Note when she galloped away with an overturned sulky. Rosethorne and Logan Park were always in the van of a well-strung-out field, and the latter went to the front four furlongs from home, and was never seriously challenged. The race gave evidence of the fact that large fields do not always provide a good racing spectacle. The field was spread over a furlong in the first quarter, and it was practically a onehorse race over the final half-mile. The win was a popular success, as. J. M'Kewen, who held the reins over the winner,'has been rather unlucky with his horses in recent years, and a smile from Dame Fortune became a pleasure to witness. Merry Bingen, followed by Audobell, made the running for the first mile and a-half in the Otago Cup. Le' Todd, broke

half a mile from home, but did not lose ground. Audobell joined Merry Bingen when going to the far turn, but put in a bad break and lost his place. Blue Thorpe headed Merry Bingen two furlongs from home, and led Le Todd and Charles Dixie into the straight. Le Todd was in charge half-way up the straight, and apparently had the race won when he broke. This left Blue Thorpe to come on and win by nearly three lengths. Charles Dixie was about the same distance away, and then came Proud Ata, Ingle Bingen, and Bonny Spec. Neither Escapade nor Money Spider managed to gather their handicaps and look dangerous at any stage of the race. Miss lona Irwin again had the pleasure of presenting a trophy, as a cup went with the stakes, and so imparted more than ordinary interest to the race. Ding Dong Bell and Avenger led the way at the end of the first furlong in the King George Handicap, but the latter did not last very long. Trimmer, Jolly Chimes, Honour Bright, Golden Bubbles, and Desborough were racing in close order with a lap to go. Jolly Chimes, Honour Bright, and Desborough, in that order from the rails, led into the straight together, and after a fighting finish the judge could not separate the two firstnamed. Desborough was a bad third, just in front of Some Wilkes, Logan Holme, and Avenger. A well-backed chance in Terence Dillon got within eight or 10 lengths of the leaders half a mile from home. He was on the outside, and had to cover a good deal of extra ground, but never looked dangerous over the final quarter. Desborough looked rather dangerous when going down the back for the last time, but failed to stay on after being one of the leaders into the straight. Nantwich dwelt a bit at the breakaway in the Flying Handicap, but once she hit her hobbles was always travelling like a winner. Parkwood held a change of getting second, but he skipped under pressure when 100 yards from home. The partially barren honour of being second went to Bingen Lad, who was fruitlessly endeavouring to give 24yds to the winner. The totalisator handled £25,427 for the day, compared with £28,867 for the first day of the summer meeting last year, which, of course, was held during the period of the Exhibition. Results:— VAUXHALL HANDICAP, of 225sovs, second 40sovs and third 20sovs. Saddle; unhoppled trotters only. For horses that can do 4.4| (2.30) or ' better. One mile and five furlongs. 6—Mr G. Jade led round the circuit, and commencing the final lap Jade, Hawkesbury’s Pride, Alpha Wilkes, and Great Elect were running together. Hawkesbury’s Pride was in front entering the back stretch, just clear of Alpha Wilkes and Great Elect. Hawkesbury’s Pride held his place well in the run home, and won b v four lengths from Ben Logan, both Great Elect and Alpha Wilkes breaking under pressure. Great Elect was a length behind Ben Logan, and Jade fourth. Then came Alpha Wilkes, Marvin Bell, Swiftest, and Bon Wood in a bunch. Times: 4min 2 4-ssec, 4min 2 4-ssec, 4min 2sec.

Mountain Chimes carried on the running into the back stretch from Reta, Grey Cloud, and Berenice with Honour Bright moving up. Reta broke at the far' turn, and entering the straight Berenice joined Mountain Chimes, with Grey Cloud and Honour Bright handy. At the distance Grey Cloud challenged strongly, and in n punishing finish won by a length from Mountain Chimes, who was a couple of lengths in front of Honour Bright. Going past the stand for the second time Nelson M'Kinney and Elzear were six lengths clear of Burnie, and then came Avalanche. Nelson M'Kinney and ' the favourite drew away from the field, and at the far turn Elzear took charge. Commencing the last lap Elzear was just in front of Nelson M'Kinney, and then Avalanche, trotting well, took . second place behind the favourite, Burnie and Swiftbine some distance off. Elzear easily held his place over the final five furlongs, and beat Real Lady, who came with a late run, by four lengths. Jolly Chimes took charge going down the back stretch, where Trimmer was losing his position, and Desborough was showing out. Nantwieh held her place into the back stretch, and was first into the straight, where Parkwood challenged, but broke. Nantwieh came on to win by four lengths from Emgen Lad, who was a length in front of Bessie Logan. Parkwood was fourth. Times: 2min 16 2-ssec, 2min 15 l-ssec, 2min 14 3-ssec. Second Day.—Saturday, January 29. The Club concluded its summer meeting in fine weather, and a particularly large attendance viewed the racing. The card for the day again provided some very interesting spbrt and close finishes. The track was slightly faster than on the opening day, but nothing in the way of records was put up during the afternoon. Sea Pearl won the principal event after a well-contested battle, and the New Zealand Trotting Stakes saw the downfall of a strong favourite in Peter 1‘ ashion, who carried nearly three times as much money as Quickfire, who went out second in demand.

Great Bell soon established a good lead in the Waverley Handicap, and although showing some indications of a tendency to mix in the early part 6f the race, really made it a one-horse affair. Elzear threatened danger over the final half-mile, but Great Bell had sufficient in reserve to stall off her challenge. Nelson M'Kinney went a fairly good race, and so did Elzear, but most of the others showed a broken gait t and nothing had a chance with the winner. Mountain Chimes soon hit the front in the Telegraph Handicap, and kept clear all the way. He finally stalled off a challenge front Albert Logan, but his chance of success was never seriously in jeopardy. Final M'Kinney started a strong fancy, but proved himself not so good as his handicap. Peter Fashion was elected a good favourite for the New Zealand Trotting Stakes, but he misbehaved himself at. the start and afterwards put in a skip. Peter Fashion was on the back of Quickfire’s wheel over the final circuit, but the latter held him at bay and won by nearly two lengths. The others were not in the picture. Sea Pearl went out favourite for the Forbury Handicap. She soon got into a handy position, and with a lap to go was racing in front with Parkwood. As they swept into the straight Parkwood and Sea Pearl were still racing together in charge of the field, with Downcast, Trenand, Logan Chief, and Black Admiral in close attendance. Sea Pearl maintained her place, and, coming on, just beat Parkwood. Black Admiral was a length away third, and then in close order came Logan Chief, Trenand, and Loganwood. Logan Park ran in the ownership of Mr R. A. Armstrong in the Stewards’ Handicap, and W. J. Tomkinson held the reins over the Logan Pointer gelding. Logan Park failed to begin, and after Bricklayer led for about a mile Sandown cut down First Water and won by two lengths. Author Jinks was a moderate third, and then came Lingfield, who beat Kinney Dillon in the run home. Bricklayer faded out and failed to stay after making the early running. During the early part of the day Ingle Bingen was purchased by Messrs Smail and Hadfield and ran in their interests in the Crescent Handicap. Ingle Bingen, Merry Bingen, and Audobell soon drew well clear of the balance of the field, and the result appeared to lie between them. Audobell put himself completely out of court by two bad breaks, and Ingle Bingen, going a level race all the way, wou well by

10 lengths from Happy / Rosa, who beat Merry Bingen by two’ lengths. Bonny rii? ec finlahed fourth and Audobell next, lhe back-markers were iiever dangerous. Ding Dong Bell, Jolly Chimes, and Desborough struck trouble when the field in the Royal Handicap began the serious part of the business. With a lap to go Avenger and Logan Hanlon were heading a pack, with Some Wilkes wide out and in a bad position. Half a mile from home Logan Holme commenced to draw clear, and, coming on, won by four lengths .from Honour Bright, who beat Avenger by a length. Logan Lily, Haunui, and High Jinks followed the placed lot. The card for the day and a successful meeting concluded by Bessie Logan winning the Au Revoir Handicap from Loganwood and Golden Devon. Nantwieh looked very dangerous over the first halfmile, but a bit too much use was made of her, and she failed to see out the journey. The totalisator handled £37,859 10s, as compared with £42,190 10s for the second day last year (Exhibition year). The total for the meeting was £63,286 10s, as against £71,057 10s for the summer meeting of 1226. Results:— WAVERLEY HANDICAP, of 225sovs; second 40sovs and third 20sovs. Harness; unhoppled trotters only. For horses that can do 4.3? (2.30) or better. One mile and five furlongs. I—Mr1 —Mr T.
