THEFT OF TOOLS.
ACCUSED SENT-TO GAOL. WELLINGTON. January 17. “The theft of workmen’s tools is always regarded as a serious matter. It is impossible for me to impose a fine in this case,” said Mr J. H. Salmon, S.M., when Russell Sydney Diamond, a carpenter, aged 20. admitted the theft' of tools worth £5 19s 6d, belonging to Charles Baker and others. Chief Detective Ward stated that the accused had been employed as a carpenter on tho new A.M.P. building until, the middle of December, when he left the the job. On January 7 'he returned and stole the tools from other men’s boxes. All the missing articles had been recovered, however. Diamond was before the court last July, when he was admitted to pr<> bation for three years on (two charges of theft. The magistrate imposed a sentence of oa* month’s imprisonment.
