AN UNPOSTED LETTER.
GROCER’S ASSISTANT’S DECEIT. AUCKLAND, January 17. It was stated in the Police Court to-day that quite a let of caused by Keith M’Alister, aged 21' .who pleaded guilty to stating fraudulently that he posted a letter containing £ll to H. L. White, Karangahape road, whereas he did not do so. It was stated by Senior Detective Hammon J" that accused had purchased a motor cycle from Mr White and was -in arrears with his payments. M'Alister went to White and complained that he did not receive a receipt for the £ll which he said he had posted. Complaint was made to the Post Office about the non-delivery of the letter containing the money. At St. Heliers Post Office inquiries that were made showed that the letter had never been posted. “Quite a lot of trouble was caused and the officials at the Post Office came urder suspicion,” said Mr Hammond, who added that M‘Alister was a grocer’s assistant and that nothing was previously known against him. Mr Oliphant, who appeared on accused s behalf, characterised M'Alister’s action as stupid and foolish. He was out of work and' did not realise what he was doing. He was too stupid in what he had done to be dishonest. Mr F. K. Hunt remanded M'Alister until to-morrow morning for sentence.
