SATURDAY HALF-HOLIDAY.
AN INVERCARGILL MOVEMENT. INVERCARGILL, July 14. The half-holiday question is still being discussed very freely among the retail tradespeople of Invercargill, and there appeals to be a growing feeling that after all the Saturday afternoon closure is the best for all concerned. At the beginning of June the mercantile firms decided to revert to the Saturday instead of the Wednesday half-holiday, and since their decision was made known the electrical firms and the skin buyers have also changed over. Many of the retail shopkeepers have been giving the matter their earnest consideration, and it is more than probable that they, too, will fall into line before very lohg, because many business men have found that the ole argument that the country residents .come to town on a Saturday does not apply since the advent of the, motor car. The Invercargill Grocers’ Association is the latest organisation to give consideration to the matter, and at a meeting last night it was decided, after a full discussion, to advise the Hardware Association that all the grocery firms were in favour of a Saturday half-holiday.
