A GIGANTIC KAURI.
LARGEST IN NEW ZEALAND. AUCKLAND, July 7. The opinion that the measurements of large kauri trees should be taken and preserved before it is too late was expressed by Mr W. R. M'Gregor, lecturer in biology at the Auckland University College, in a lecture on the kauri tree in the North Auckland district at a meeting of the Auckland Institute last evening. Mr M'Gregor gave an interesting account, of a trip into the Waipoua district, near Ilokianga, and his visit to what is believed to be the largest kauri tree in New Zealand. This tree, which standß alone on a steep hill side, has a girth near the base of 50ft, while the length of its barrel is 50ft. The roots extend for chains from the base of the tree. Some years ago there was another kauri tree near Kuihu with a girth of about 43ft, but the barrel was short and stunted.
