Careless use of matches aooounted for 10 of the 51 fires that ooourred in buildings in Wanganui during the year ended on June 30. Nine were oaused by sparks from fires, three by defective chimneys, four by baokfiring of motor engines, and two by cigarette butts (aays the Herald), while a bird’s nest which came in contact with a chimney-pip© contributed one of the alarms. Of the 61 fires. 10 were in dwellings, and the remainder in various buildings, from schools to fowlbousee. Buspicious circumstances were noticeable in two instances.
