LUMSDEN.

July I.—On Thursday night, June 24, in Johnson’s Hall, a farewell social was tendered Mr G. T. Alley prior to his leaving with the All Blacks. Mr T. Small (president of the Lumsden Football Club) occupied the chair. Mr W. Clark (president of the Northern District Sub-union) on behalf of the residents and footballers in the district, presented Mr Alley with a gold watch as a memento of his associations with the district. Other speakers were Dr Watson and the Rev. Mr Lawrence, both of whom expressed regret at the departure of the guest as a citizen and a footballer. Mr Alley thanked the residents for their valuable gift, expressing regTet at having to leave the district, and wishing the JNorthern district every success. Numerous toasts were ’responded to, and the proceedings were enlivened by songs, recitations, a cornet solo, and selections by the Lumsden Brass Band. The singing of "Auld Lang Syne” brought the evening to a close. On Friday afternoon, June 25, Mr Alley, who has given up farming, left by train for Invercargill, when there was a large number of friends present at the station to bid him farewell. Tournament.—A very successful hockey seven-a side tournament was held on the local recreation grounds on Saturday, June 26, when there was a large attendance, £2B being collected at the gate. The weather was ideal, and the grounds were in good order. The success of the tournament reflected credit on the secretary (Mrs H. Henderson) and the committee*in charge of the arrangements. Fifteen ladies’ teams and eight girls’ teams competed. In the former were High School (Gore), Athol, Dipton* Waikaia A, Waikaia B, Lumsden, Otautau, Gore Ladies, Balfour A, Balfour B, Mossburn, Gore Ex-High, Wendon, Western Star (Riverton), and Riversdale. In the first round Lumsden (2) beat Otautau (nil), Mr M'Caw being referee. In the second round, Lumsden (1) beat Balfour B, nil; referee Mr Paulin. In the semi-final round, Western Star (2) beat Lumsden (nil), Mr Hamilton being referee. The Lumsden team was composed of the following ladies: Mrs Heath (captain). Misses J. Campbell. M. Richards, M. Small, J. Rodgers, C. Reidy, and L. Marshall. The girls’ teams competing were Lumsden A and Lumsden *-B, Waikaia, Riversdale, Dipton, Mossburn, Wendon, and Balfour In the first round Lumsden A <s) defeated Waikaia (nil): referee. Mr Campbell. Second round, Lumsden A (1), Riversdale (nil); referee, Mr Caldwell. Lumsden A (3), Balfour (1), in the final round, Mr Caldwell being Teferee. Thus the Lumsden schoolgirls (Mona Menzies, captain, Hilda Small, Hah Hall, Margaret Kirkpatrick, Alice Brooks, Maggie Sherriff, Myra Belsham) became the possessors of the silver medals, the silver cups going to the Gore ladies, who proved the winners in the adult section. Sale.—A veiy successful bring and buy sale was held in Johnson’s Hall to-day, when the sura of £9 odd was realised with the object of buying material for a bazaar to be held in November. * At a meeting held in the evening, Mrs J. Clouston was elected president, and Mies Lee secretary and treasurer, and it was decided to hold sewing meetings on Wcdnesdav afternoon each week. The proceeds of this bazaar are to be used towards beautifying the local school grounds. Personal.—Mr D. Galbraith, agent for Messrs Wright. Stephenson and Co., left on June 20 to take up duty in the Winton district. His nlace has been taken by Mr G. Clelland, who commenced duties to-day.
