MISS STOCKLEY CREATES NEW RECORD.

SYDNEY, February 24. The second carnival of the Australian ladies’ swimming championships was held at Coogee to-night. Results:— 440yds Freestyle Championship of Australia.—Claire Couldwell (N.S.W.) 1, Piri Page (N.Z.) 2, Muriel Allen (Victoria) 3. Time, 6min 21 9-10 sec. Won bv 10yds, with syds between second and third. 100yds Back-stroke Championship of Australia.—Ena 9tockley (N.Z.) 1, Mealing (N.S.W.) 2, Venning (Queensland) 3. Time lmin 21 2-ssec. 100yds Handicap Race. —Vera Pawling 3sec (N.S.W.), easily beat Ena Stockley scr. In the 440yds Championship Piri Page (New Zealand) was lying third early. She was taking every advantage of the turns, gaining on each occasion. At 300yds, with a good sprint, she came up beside the leader, who from 350yds displayed a fine burst of speed till the end, the New Zealander being unable to respond. In the 100yds Back-stroke Championship Miss Stockley (New Zealand) took the lead early, and was Bft ahead at the turn. On tire return lap she set up a speed impossible to surpass, and won by 4yds from Miss Mealing. Although the Coogee baths are not adapted to record-breaking because of the shallow water, being 3ft at one end, the New Zealand girl clipped 7 2-ssecs off the Australian record. Miss Mealing (New South Wales) also reduced her own record time, taking lmin 24 2-ssec to cover the distance. Miss Stockley’s time lmin 21 2-ssec.
